Central Heating & Boilers

Advice

If you are thinking about having a central heating system installed or your boiler looks like it needs to be replaced, then why not consider a gas condensing boiler. Whilst it is true that people had genuine reasons not to like them in the past e.g. pressure wasn't very good. The technology has now matured and you should experience nothing but an effective and efficient system.

The size of the boiler depends on whether you get a standard boiler with a hot water tank, or a combination boiler. The size of a standard boiler is going to be mostly dependant on the size of the dwelling you live in, maybe around the 15kw size.

If you go with a combination boiler then we would recommend a size no less than a 30kw, as a smaller system might not be able to feed a shower and a separate tap at the same time.

Look for a Sedbuk A (over 90% efficient) boiler which will ensure that less CO2 emissions are emitted and your gas bills are kept to a absolute minimum. See the Sedbuk database using the link on the right.

Remember that it is important to seek professional help as they will help to find the boiler and central heating system that best suits you and your dwelling.

Other sustainable considerations

Nitrogen Oxide emissions (also known as NOx emissions) are a major cause of air pollution and to reduce this pollution I would recommend a minimum Class 5 NOx (less than 70mg/kwh) boiler, though the best boilers emit less than 40mg/Kwh.

A condensing boiler can be connected straight to the water mains which will allow you to take out the hot water tank and the cold water tank. If you live in a small dwelling then this can add some extra storage space.
