Cooking & Refrigeration

    Consider the following:

  1. Defrost your fridge/freezer regularly as the frost puts extra demand on the motor and therefore consumes more electricity. If you find more excessive frost in your fridge/freezer then the seal on your door might be allowing air in. The water vapour in the air is condensed and becomes the frost. The seal will need replaced.
  2. Try not to put hot food into the fridge as this will warm the air and cause extra burden on the motor (yet more electricity). Allow the food to cool down to near room temperature, before placing it in the fridge.
  3. Try not to keep the refrigerator door open any longer than necessarily as this will allow excessive warmth into the fridge.
  4. If you plan an evening meal and need to defrost something from the freezer then why not take it out in the morning and place it in the fridge. This will reduce the load on the motor and save some electricity.
  5. If you have a kitchen that is flexible or you’re having your kitchen renewed then try not to have the cooker placed too closely to the fridge. This would cause more heat to make its way into the fridge and therefore cause the motor to work overtime.
  6. If you don’t regularly use all the compartments in your freezer then consider filling the empty compartment with scrupled paper as this will reduce the amount of cold air being replaced by warm air and hence reduce the amount of work the motor must perform.
