Advice
Consider the following advice:
- Comfortable and healthy room temperatures are 21°C for the living room and all other areas of the dwelling at 18°C.
- Only heat rooms that are being used.
- During the winter make sure that the minimum setting on any radiator is ‘frost protection.’ This might use some extra heat but it will reduce the chance of your central heating system getting damaged.
- At night close all curtains as this will reduce heat loss during the night and make it easy and quicker to heat your dwelling in the morning.
- Wearing an extra layer of clothing e.g. a jumper can significantly reduce your need for heating.
- An unused chimney can be responsible for a large amount of heat loss due to excessive ventilation. A ‘chimney balloon’ blocks the draughts and improves thermal comfort.
- Just had a hot bath, then why not leave the hot water in the bath to warm the house.
- Set your hot water tank to a temperature of 60°C which will be hot enough for your needs, kills any nasties and will not lose an excessive amount of heat.
Other sustainable considerations
Make sure that the house is ventilated, even if it means losing some energy (warm air). As most energy is stored within your furniture, it is worth opening the window for about 5 to 10minutes which will allow the air to exchange, but the energy stored in your furniture will help to reheat the room.
