Advice
Consider topping up the loft insulation in your dwelling to a level of 270mm. In a normal loft this might involve two layers where 100mm is laid between the ceiling joists and another 170mm cross-laid on top. Make sure there are no air gaps, though DO NOT cover the air ventilation at the eaves!
Insulation and installation can cost around a couple of hundred pounds, though it depends on the size of property you live in. However there are grants out there which can help. If you're interested then we would recommend that you go check out the Energy Saving Trust in the 'Links' on the right, which has an easy to use grants database you can search.
Other Sustainable issues
Using more natural materials such as sheep's wool, flax plant fibres or wood fibre, will have a FURTHER reduced environmental impact.
Using insulation made from recycled paper (Cellulose Fibre)
These materials might cost more than normal man-made fibre insulations and again you'll have to balance the cost against the environmental benefits.
