Chickens are a major food source in the UK and wider world. In order to keep production costs as low as possible many chickens have been forced to live in extremely cramped conditions, which is known as ‘battery farming,’ causing a miserable life and stunted growth (the same is starting to happen to cows). Chicken and eggs can also be infected with salmonella, a virus which causes severe illness in humans and even death for the more vulnerable members of our society.
The good news is that there is a number of organisations which will certify eggs and chicken for both health and animal welfare standards.
The XXXXXX standard provides re-assurances that all possible measures have been taken to ensure that the eggs will not be infected with salmonella and other viruses. NEED MORE INFO. ON WHAT THE STANDARD ENSURES.
There are a number of organisations which is certify varying degrees of ‘free range.’ This means that the eggs are from chickens which have space to roam around and live a far better life than chickens being battery farmed.
It is also possible to buy chicken and eggs which have organic certification. This ensures that the feed is free from Genetic Modification, pesticides, artificial fertilisers, growth hormones, etc.
