Solar Water Heating

Advice

WARNING: There are many cowboys offering systems which have not proved themselves and cost up to three times more than a technically competent device. See the Low Carbon Buildings Programme for systems that are proven to do the job.

Solar water heating panels are a great way to reduce your reliance on fossil fuels for most of the year, even on cloudy days when there isn't much sun to be seen. There are many variations, including a system that heats incoming fresh air and therefore we recommend you visit our links to research the various systems available, especially the Low Carbon Buildings Programme.

The solar panel is situated on the roof in a southerly direction in order to face the sun for most of the day. The solar water heating panel system depends on your current heating system, usually by connecting into your hot water tank.

If you are considering installing a combination boiler fitted into your premise then why not check the Low Carbon Buildings Programme website to see if there are any combination boilers (with a thermal store) that can easily have a solar water heating system fitted to it.

There are companies that will carry out all the work for you including planning, grant and installation. They usually carry out a 'over the phone' survey to check you can have a system installed.

We would always recommend you talk to a professional about any concerns, technical issues or any other enquiries you may have.

A solar water heating system could provide you with around 50% (or more) of your hot water for around 9 months of the year, obviously depending on a number of factors e.g. direction

The cost of a system can be around £3000+, fully installed, but can take up 10-15+ years to pay itself off (ask the supplier for a better estimate). Though with the kinds of gas and electricity price rises above inflation we have been seeing during 2004/5 & 2005/6, it could be that the payback period reduces over time.
