Advice

Cycling has so many advantages it wasn’t easy to categorise it under the environment section. However, as it has to go somewhere I better get on with it.

Cycling is great for distances of between 1 and 5km (roughly 10 to 25minutes) especially when time is an issue and walking is too slow.

Cycling is a great way of reducing the CO2 emissions associated with travelling. In fact over the distances discussed above, a car pollutes more than when it has properly warmed up.

Cycling becomes easiest when it is integrated into your lifestyle e.g. the journey to work and back.

Other sustainable considerations

Cycling will seriously improve your health and general fitness, and all the advantages that come with that e.g. better sleep. Cycling can also save an individual a whole lot of money from reduced fuel costs, insurance and wear’n’tear. Cycling may even help to eliminate the need for a car.

Make sure you stay safe when cycling by considering the following:

• Using a helmet is a must! It will massively reduced the chance of serious injury/ death if you are involved in an accident.

• Use lights whenever there is poor visibility. A minimum is one ‘white’ light at the front and a red light at the back. Two sets can make the world of difference when it comes to being seen by others on the road, especially if the second set ‘flash’. Consider using LED lights which use less energy and therefore the battery will last longer.

• Wear fluorescent clothing (or body straps) and helmet cover, as they can be seen for quite some distance by drivers.
