Showers

Advice

When it comes to saving water when showering there are a number of aspects to consider:

If you have a shower, consider having a thermostatic valve fitted as this will keep the shower water at a fixed temperature regardless the flow-rate. This will save water and energy as you do not have to waste time trying to regulate the temperature.

A flow-restrictor can be installed on the plumbing to the shower in order to limit the maximum flow. On a typical (non-electric) shower a flow-rate can be limited to a maximum of between 6 and 12 litres.

There are a couple of showerheads in the USA which aerate the water flow, which replaces a percentage of the water that would be used. This significantly reduces the water-usage, but has been reviewed to improve the showering experience. Not sure if the USA devices can be used with British plumbing.

Other sustainable considerations

If you have a non-power shower, then taking a five minute shower everyday instead of a bath could save around 300 litres a week.
