Washing Machine

Advice

A standard washing machine can use anything from 55 to 65-litres, and that’s the new models. Older models can use much, much more though the washing and rinsing cycles.

It is possible to purchase two models which use less than 40-litres per normal wash meaning that around 50% or 20-litres per use can be saved. The two models are by John Lewis (model: John Lewis JLWM1603) or AEG.

It's also worth making sure the washing machine has a 'half-load' or 'economy' mode as this will allow you to wash fewer clothes with fewer resources. However some machines are so advanced that they do this automatically and minimise the amount of water used.

Try to size the washing machine to your requirements taking into account the number of people living in your dwelling and how often you will require your clothes cleaned.

Other sustainable considerations

When considering purchasing a washing machine to go for an energy-efficient model, where A* is the most efficient.

Other factors to look out for are a good warranty (min. three years), and Spin efficiency rating (A rating being the best).

Consider the individual actions you can make as part of your lifestyle to reduce water (see link on the above navigation bar).
