Advice

The toilet is one of the biggest water-consuming devices in the household. Most old houses have a toilet with a cistern of around 9-litres in size. Newer houses will have a 6-litre cistern as required by modern Building Control standards.

For households with the larger cisterns i.e. 9-litre cistern, you can use a offset device such a Hippo, or simple plastic water bottles. These devices will reduce the water used during use, but shouldn’t interfere with how well the toilet performs.

If you are looking to replace your toilet then you have a number of options:

1. A 6/4-litre dual-flush toilet, which has a two-button control device allowing the user to use a partial flush to save water.

2. A 4-litre single-flush toilet which uses significantly less water than the standard 6-litre toilet.

3. A 4/2-litre dual-flush toilet. However the UK accreditation authority has not passed any of these type toilets for general use, even though they have been used in Scandinavia for some time.
